A chemical and biological evaluation of Kanahia laniflora (Asclepiadaceae)

Abstract

A chemical as well as a biological screening was performed on fresh frozen plant material (root, stem, leaves, fruit) of Kanahia laniflora (Asclepiadaceae). The chemical tests were positive for cardiac glycosides, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, carbohydrates and amino acids. The plant showed no antimicrobial or phototoxic activity. The Hippocratic evaluation revealed a definite indication of sympathetic stimulation, CNS depression, diuretic activity and peripheral vasodilatation, and a slight indication of psychotropic activity and a metabolic poison.
