Abstract
The PREM Collection of fungi 1905 to 2011: An overview. The South Africa‘s National Collection of Fungi traces its origins back to 1905. Over the years the mandate has stayed the same despite the numerous changes in research focus. An overview of our activities and history will be provided.

Inhoud
As beskermheer van die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Swamversameling, kan die ontstaan van die Mikologie Eenheid, Biosistematiek, Landbounavorsingsraad, teruggevoer word na 1905. Meer as ‘n eeu gelede het ‘n Wallieser, I.B. Pole Evans, die versameling begin as deel van sy mandaat om plantsiektes in Suid-Afrika te bestudeer. Met tydsverloop het veranderinge in navorsingsfokus plaasgevind van basiese, na toegepaste en weer terug na basiese navorsing. Die rol wat die versameling in hierdie proses gespeel het bly egter van uiterse belang. Die versameling (internasionale afkorting PREM),verteenwoordig byna 60 000 swameksemplare, waarvan byna 3000 die tipemateriaal van die spesies verteenwoordig. Verder huisves die Mikologie eenheid ook, vanaf die 1970s, die lewendige kultuurversameling (internasionale afkorting PPRI) waarin byna 10 000 lewende swamkulture gestoor word. Die materiaal in beide versamelings is beskikbaar vir wetenskaplike navorsing op versoek. ‘n Oorsig van die versamelings se geskiedenis en huidige aktiwiteite sal verskaf word.
