Abstract
The influence of wind dispersion on the presence of cyanobacteria and algae on South African goldmine tailings. The presence and abundance of cyanobacteria and algae in the air on mine tailings storage facilities that is rehabilitated for different periods were determined. The high density diaspores in the atmosphere of mine tailing dumps can lead to the establishment of biological crusts that can increase the stability of the mine dumps over time.

Inhoud
Die doel van die studie was om die voorkoms en digtheid van sianobakterieë sowel as alge in die atmosfeer rondom mynuitskothope in Suid-Afrika te bepaal. Metings is in die somer van 2011 op die oppervlakke van mynuitskothope wat vars goudslikmateriaal bevat, asook persele wat reeds vir verskeie periodes gerehabiliteer is, geneem. Standaard Petribakkies met 1.5% agar in Bold Basal groeimedium is op verskillende lokaliteite uitgeplaas, waarna dit by 20 °C en ʼn ligintensiteit van 15 µmolm-2s-1 geïnkubeer is.

In totaal is 36 spesies sianobakterieë en alge geïdentifiseer. Drie genera en 5 spesies behoort tot die Cyanophyta (sianobakterieë); 16 genera en 27 spesies tot die Chlorophyta; 3 genera en 3 spesies tot die Xanthophyta en 1 spesie tot Eustigmatophyta. Die mees algemene en dominante spesies op al die persele was Klebsormidium dissectum (F. Gay) Ettl et G. Gärtner, Chlorococcum sp. en Interfilum sp.

Die meeste van die spesies wat geïdentifiseer is, is tipiese grondalge soos: Chlorococcum vacuolatum Starr, Bracteacoccus minor (Chod.) Petrova, Chlorosarcinopsis minor (Gerneck) Herndon, Klebsormidium flaccidum (Kützing) P.C. Silva, K.R. Mattox et W.H. Blackwell, Klebsormidium crenulatum (Kützing) Lokhorst, Leptosira terrestris (F.E. Fritsch et R.P. John) Printz, Myrmecia biatorellae J.B. Petersen, Palmellopsis gelatinosa Korschikov, Stichococcus minor Nägeli, Tetracystis aggregata R.M. Brown et H. Bold en Eustigmatos magnos (J.B. Petersen) D.J. Hibberd.

Die hoogste digtheid van diaspore is op die oppervlak van ‘n mynuitskothoop wat reeds vir 10 jaar gerehabiliteer word gevind: ‘n gemiddeld van 39 383 diaspore per 1 m² per 1 uur. Op die oppervlak van ‘n mynuitskothoop wat vir ʼn jaar gerehabiliteer is, is ‘n gemiddeld van 33 979 diaspore per 1 m² per 1 uur gemeet; op die hoop wat vir 15 jaar gerehabiliteer is 2296 en op vars goudslikmateriaal 471.

Die hoë digtheid diaspore in die atmosfeer van mynuitskothope kan lei tot die vestiging van biologiese korse wat ‘n groot bydrae kan lewer in die stabilisering van die mynuitskothope.
