Substitution of SiO2 with ThO2 in the ternary sodium borate system was found to produce phase separable glasses. Heat treatment of these glasses resulted in separation into at least two different phases. The soluble sodium borate-enriched phase was then leached out leaving a ThO2-rich skeleton. The structure of the leached material was mostly crystalline.
