Abstract

Diagnostic bronchoscopies done on untreated indigenous African patients with tuberculosis revealed a majority of alveolar macrophages that were filled with carbon particles. The aim of this investigation was to determine whether intracellular carbon particles could inhibit the killing of Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) by the alveolar macrophage.
