The theory of operation, which takes into account the system losses, of the Melville line pulse compressor, is presented. The relationship between the total volume of magnetic material, the overall compression ratio and the number of stages show that a minimum volume of material is required when the compression ratio per stage, irrespective of the required overall compression ratio.
