Data collected during a cruise of the RV Meiring Naudé in September 1985 indicated the existence of two cyclonic eddies situated south of the Mozambique Channel. The western eddy interrupted the layer of Subtropical Surface Water and transported 17-25 X 10⁶m³s¯¹ (relative to a reference level of 1 000 db). The eastern eddy was not surveyed sufficiently to obtain a realistic impression of its transport.
