The inductor core volume of any loop in a Melville line pulse compressor may be reduced by allowing the inductor to saturate prior to complete charge transfer of the preceding loop. Two loops are thus active simultaneously and interactively, constituting a fifth order system. Hereby the core volume can be reduced to less than 30% of that of a comparable Melville line. The behaviour and design parameters of such a simultaneous transfer compressor are investigated by means of a theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and physical modelling of the system.
